As the outcome of MCI’s summit on 12th September 2011,the Medical council of India(MCI) finally decided to start common entrance test (CET) which will be called as National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for Post Graduates (NEET-PG) and Under Graduates (NEET-UG) for undergraduate and post-graduate medical students from next year.
All the states in the country gave its approval for CET(NEET) from 2012 except Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, and Bengal according to the sources from MCI.Also the issues with the states disapproving the NEET proposal will be solved soon, officials said.
According to a senior official of the MCI “States like Gujarat and Bengal had issues with the language of the paper, as we had originally planned to start the exam in English and Hindi only. But this issue can be taken care of and we will soon get in touch with the CBSE on this point.”
Sources disclosed that NEET- UG will be conducted by the CBSE and AIIMS might be conducting NEET-PG.
According to Dr Purushottam Lal, who is a board member of the MCI, “Queries related to the reservation policy and seats for private colleges were answered well during the discussion today. The states have been conducting the exam in their regional languages. So they were concerned, but these are petty things and will be sorted out.”
Tamil Nadu is still opposing the idea of CET for medical colleges.Tamil Nadu has maximum number of medical colleges. Also former C.M K. Karunanidhi had also written to the Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad that he was “astonished” by the notification, when the idea was proposed last year.
The Tamil Nadu government later got it stayed from the Madras High court.
Dr Lal, however, said that situation is different now. “We are going by the orders of the Supreme Court, so all the states must have to come to a consensus.”
